melting silver? Any thing i should know?
hello i am going to buy an ingot mould to make my own ingots out of silver. is there any tips of advice ie ventilation, breathing equipment? many thanks in advance dave wilson
Don’t know how much experience you’ve got of casting. If you haven’t any experience, I’d advise practicing with colder” melting metals first, and work up to temperature
when casting watch out for spills of hot metal, both because of the risk of burns and fire, and also because if it comes into contact with water it can cause a steam explosion. Having furnace and mould on a (dry) sand bed is a real good idea. full face shield a good idea too, as are decent leather shoes (foundry boots are perhaps best!),. welding gauntlets/apron. Keep covered up, and keep your work area tidy, and work methodically to reduce risk of spillage.

furnace…
electric is the easiest, but perhaps the most costly to run. A decent one should prevent you overheating the silver
charcoal fired furnace are really easy (use hairdryer/vacuum cleaner in reverse for an air blast) , but don’t use indoors because they pump out carbon monoxide
propane- fairly fast, but got to watch out for gas leaks (a really bad idea to spill molten metal on the gas hose) also propane is a little pricey.
crucible- With semi-precious metals you really want to keep the metal pure, so you’ll need a ceramic crucible- quite pricey, and they need to be looked after properly. Also more likely to crack and split the molten metal everywhere
make sure you’ve got spare molds to hold any left over metal. If your moulds are full, you shouldn’t let metal solidify in a crucible, especially a ceramic one, as it increase the risk of crucible breakage..

Lots of stuff on aluminium casting should be fairly appropriate as it’s just a bit hotter still for silver (ok about 300 deg). Anyway looking at the following site should be of some help…

If using a charcoal fired furnace you probably wouldn’t need a flux. the carbon moxide should if anything reduce oxides back to the pure metal (alu’s even more reactive than silver, and you don’t need a flux with that in a charcoal fired furnace)

not certain if silver can cause it but keep one eye out for metal fume fever. given that certain ezymes in the body contain silver, it probably can.

Also if using dry refractories/dusty products at any point be certain to protect your lungs with a face mask
